Job Title: Tax Accountant IV

Reports To: Tax Manager

Location: Houston, TX

Job Type: Contract

High-Level Description

The Senior U.S. Income Tax Analyst will support the U.S. Tax Department in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, while also contributing to efficient tax processes and strategies to minimize the present value of Company’s tax liabilities. While the primary focus will be on income tax compliance, the role also includes U.S. income tax reporting, analysis, and provision support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance
  • Prepare federal corporate and partnership income tax returns.
  • Prepare foreign information returns (e.g., Forms 5471, 8858).
  • Assist in calculating Subpart F and GILTI income.
  • Prepare separate and combined state income and franchise tax returns.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing state apportionment factors.
  • Participate in federal and state estimated tax payment calculations.
  • Support the preparation and review of the consolidated federal income tax return.
  • Tax Reporting & Analysis
  • Work with tax depreciation systems to calculate depreciation and related tax adjustments.
  • Assist in computing state effective tax rates and true-ups for both state and federal reporting.
  • Conduct legislative and regulatory research to identify tax issues impacting the company.
  • Prepare reconciliations of tax basis balance sheets and ensure accuracy of related records.
  • Systems & Process Improvement
  • Interface with financial systems (e.g., Oracle Cloud, HFM) to gather and analyze data.
  • Develop and maintain audit-ready tax workpapers.
  • Utilize and help enhance technology tools and tax processes (e.g., Corptax, SharePoint, BNA Fixed Assets).
  • Participate in electronic filing (e-filing) of federal and state tax returns.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Scope and Dimensions

This role supports a complex U.S./Canadian corporate structure and requires a self-motivated individual with strong technical knowledge in U.S. income tax. The position emphasizes problem-solving, technical analysis, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Working Relationships

  • Reports to the Tax Manager .
  • Collaborates with teams across U.S. accounting, finance, and regulatory functions.
  • Interfaces with external advisors, auditors, and tax authorities.
  • Provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior tax team members.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • CPA certification and/or Master’s in Taxation preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in U.S. income tax compliance and reporting, ideally within the energy sector.

Technical Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, foreign, and state income tax laws.
  • Familiarity with U.S. tax accounting concepts (ASC 740).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience with tax software including Corptax, BNA Fixed Assets, and tax research tools.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex tax concepts for non-tax professionals.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
